  3. great-grandson of Louis XIV. Indolent and
  4. frivolous, Louis left government in the hands
  5. of his ministers, the Duke of Bourbon and
  6. Cardinal Fleury (1653-1743). On the latter's
  7. death he attempted to rule alone, but became
  8. entirely dominated by his mistresses, Mme de
  9. Pompadour and Mme Du Barry. His foreign
  10. policy led to Canada and India being lost to
  11. England.
